How to keep the research productive

Now I’m an M.Sc. student and got a lot of research projects to work on. The projects are all about synthesizing organic compounds. Of course, it’s not just one or two step and got the final product. Some requires 3 steps, some requires like 10 steps. And I run all these projects simultaneously. It would be a mess if I didn’t put the tasks down somewhere about what is the current status of each projects and what have to be done in each. A mess I mean I have to recall the task on everyday I step in the lab. If I’m lucky, I recalled but waste a little bit of time. If not, I may forget it and left that flask in the hood for a while which might decompose before I realized it.

Here is my solution. I use Google tasks to manage them. Each lists for each projects. In each list, I note down all minor steps of each projects like waiting for NMR of 2-NT or distill CHCl3. And I sync them to my droid using Gtasks. That’s it.

Now when I walk into the lab, I open Gtasks, review all the tasks and see what tasks can be done in the time slot I have in that day.

My first lab accident – luck in bad luck

Today, I was planning to do lithium-halogen exchange reaction which is of course has to be performed under dry condition. First thing I have to do is to set a vacuum line.  Here the accident occurred.

To prepare a cold trap, I had to remove the remaining solvent from last night inside a Dewar flask. And to do that, I had to disconnect the vacuum line from the cold trap but it’s tightly connected. I twisted the line back and forth. And…

 

Boom!!!

 

The Dewar flask shattered into thousand pieces of sharp glass with a very loud bang sound (even people far away can heard  it and came to see what happened). The pieces spread over the area within 1 meter radius. But not even one piece of that thing ran into me. How lucky I am!

 

How that occured? My suspect is that while I was disconnecting them, I might have the cold trap bump the Dewar flask. Because a Dewar flask is made of two layers of glass with a vacuum between them, with a tiny crack on the surface, it will suck air, creating high pressure inside the cavity, and blow up.

That’s it.

5 | Manuscript in preparation pt 1

Some might wonder why I number this entry with 5. There are 4 other entries in this categories that i have been writing about it during my research but i will release them after the paper got accepted.

After i knew i have to write the paper, i was a little bit surprised and nervous coz i think it’s too big task for me. Anyway, I have to write it.

So, I started googling about how to prepare the manuscript  and I found this stuff ‘“Whitesides’ Group: Writing a Paper.”

This article was written by George M. Whitesides in Advanced Materials about how to write a good paper. He told all the processes should be done during the research but i can assure you that you cannot apply all of them. It’s a little bit different in each field. Now, I feel more confident.

Then i did the lit review to look who have done the stuffs like mine. It’s kinda sad that s’one just published, Jan 2010, the article about the synthesis of the compounds which is really close to mine.

After all, all my remain selling point is just 2-step synthesis.

I hope i don’t have to put the word ‘alternative approach’ into this manuscript.

ฝนตกห่าใหญ่

บ่ายของวันนี้ฝนตกลงมาหนักมาก มากขนาดน้ำท่วมจนถึงทางเดิน

น้ำท่วมทางเดิน มองจากหน้าต่างตึกเคมี

แล้วซักพักไฟก็ดับ ไฟฉุกเฉินตามทางเดินก็ทำงานได้ดี

ปัญหาคือ ระหว่างนั้นกำลังลงเพลทอยู่ และสกัดสารอยู่ด้วย ซึ่งทั้งคู่ เหม็น!
ทำงานต่อไม่ได้เลย เพราะ ไฟดับ hood ก็ไม่ดูด ทำให้ต้องเลื่อน sash ลงต่ำ กันกลิ่นออกมาระหว่างนั้น
โชคดียังมีไฟฉาย คอยดูเพลทได้

ไฟดับครั้งนี้ ราวๆ เกือบชั่วโมงได้

ยังสงสัยว่าถ้าเกิดดับวันธรรมดา ความเสียหายจะขนาดไหน
แต่ถ้าจะมีระบบไฟสำรอง ให้ระบบพอทำงานไปได้ คงจะต้องลงทุนไม่น้อย

Needed Tricks in Seminar Class

I just finished a seminar presentation yesterday and it turned out to be better than I expected. In the last moment of the class, course directors gave some suggestions which I think it would be useful to take some notes here.

• not tell everything in the paper, just its main idea
• talk some background about what you are talking about to get audiences appreciate with the topic
• 1 slide 1 idea or 1 slide 1.1 idea
• good materials good presentation

And here are my techniques

• select the representative of the audiences – the audiences here were year 4 students, so my good representative would be year 3 student

ตั้งแต่เข้ามหาวิทยาลัยมา ใช้ดินสอกดมากกว่าปากกาเยอะ เพราะรู้สึกว่า เหมือนใช้ดินสอจดแล้วมันจะเร็วกว่าปากกา ตั้งแต่นั้นมาก็ซื้อดินสอกดไปหลายด้ามพอดู นับรวมๆ กันก็ได้ประมาณ 6 แท่งแล้ว (แต่ตอนนี้มีอยู่ 5 แท่ง) วันนี้เลยจับมารีวิวซะหน่อย

Pentel - Caplet 0.5

แท่งนี้ซื้อมาตั้งแต่สมัยมัธยม ตั้งแต่ ม. 2 เป็นอันที่อึดทรหดมาก ใช้มาไม่เคยผิดหวัง มีปลอกที่เอาไว้ปิดได้ด้วย แต่ไม่เคยเอามาปิด ตกแล้วตกเล่าก็ยังใช้ได้ตามปกติ แต่น้ำหนักเบาไปหน่อย ไม่ค่อยเหมาะมือ

แท่งนี้เป็นอีกแท่งนึงที่อึดไม่แพ้กัน น้ำหนักเหมาะมือมากขึ้น ส่วนที่จับไส้ดินสอเป็นทองเหลือง มียางรองนิ้วให้สัมผัสกระชับมือ อีกทั้งส่วนหัวสามารถหดเก็บได้ ทำให้เวลาตกแล้วไม่หัก

ปกติ ดินสอกดเวลาเราเขียนไปเรื่อยๆ จะมีด้านที่ทู่ และด้านที่แหลม เวลาเขียนเราก็ต้องหมุนดินสอกดไปเรื่อยๆ เพื่อให้น้ำหนักของเส้นดินสอสม่ำเสมอกัน แต่แท่งนี้ มันหมุนให้อัตโนมัติ! ทำให้เราสามารถจับเหมือนเดิมเขียนไปโดยที่น้ำหนักของเส้นดินสอเท่ากันตลอด…

กลไกของมันคือ พอเราจรดปลายไส้ดินสอลงบนกระดาษ มันจะมีชุดฟันเฟืองที่หมุนไส้ดินสอไปเรื่อยๆ ปัญหาคือ เวลาจดเร็วๆ จะแทบไม่ได้ยกดินสอกด ทำให้กลไกมันไม่ทำงาน กลายเป็นว่า ไม่ได้ใช้ประโยชน์จากกลไกของมัน แถมพอจรดปลายดินสอกดมันจะหดไปหนึ่งจังหวะ ทำให้รำคาญอีกต่างหาก แถมขนาดของมันอ้วนเกินไป ไม่เหมาะมืออย่างยิ่ง

ยังคิดอยู่ว่า แท่งนี้อาจจะเหมาะกับภาษาบางภาษาที่ต้องยกดินสอกดบ่อยๆ มากกว่า

Pentel - GraphGear 500

แท่งนี้ อาจจะเรียกว่าเป็น Uni Body ก็เกือบจะได้นะเนี่ย เพราะส่วนหัว (cap) ของมันถอดออกมาไม่ได้ ถอดได้แต่ส่วนที่จะเติมไส้ดินสอ ซื้อมาเพราะน้ำหนักเหมาะมือทีเดียว แต่ใช้ไปซักพักก็ต้องวาง เพราะลักษณะการจับดินสอ จับปากกาของผมไม่เหมือนชาวบ้าน ทำให้นิ้วโป้งต้องไปสัมผัสกับรอยต่อระหว่างส่วนเรียบ กับ ส่วนขรุขระ ซึ่งระดับไม่เท่ากันพอดี ทำให้เจ็บที่ข้อนิ้วโป้งพอสมควร

มีอยู่ครั้งนึงเคยทำตก แล้วเหมือนไส้ดินสอมันหักตรงที่ส่วนหัวพอดี จะแกะออกมาก็แกะไม่ได้ คิดว่าเสียซะแล้ว แต่ทิ้งไว้ซักพัก เอามาเขียนใหม่ ดันเขียนได้ เลยเก็บไว้เป็นแท่งสำรอง

Edit คงไม่ใช้ unibody ซะแล้ว เำพราะมันแยกส่วนหัวได้ วิธีแยก อ่านในคอมเมนต์นะครับ

แท่งนี้เป็นแท่งที่ใช้อยู่ปัจจุบัน ดีทุกอย่าง น้ำหนักเหมาะมือ ขนาดพอเหมาะ มียางช่วยให้รู้สึกกระชับบริเวณปลายด้ามที่ยาวมากพอที่จะรองรับนิ้วโป้ง มีที่จิ้มไส้ดินสอกดเวลาตันติดมากับยางลบด้วย เสียอย่างเดียว คือ แพงเกินหน้าเกินตาของมัน

ปล. เคยซื้อดินสอกด Rotring มาสองแท่ง ต้องซื้อแท่งที่สองเพราะแท่งแรกหาย ตอนนั้นซื้อเพราะคิดว่า Rotring นี่มันดีสุดๆ แล้ว ที่ไหนได้ แพงแถมห่วย ตกที ไส้หัก 100% แถมเปลี่ยนไส้ก็ยาก ไอ้จุกที่ปิดที่ใส่ไส้ดินสอกดไม่รู้จะแน่นไปไหน จับก็ไม่ถนัดมือ ยังรู้สึกเสียดายตังค์จนถึงเดี๋ยวนี้

สื่อยัดเยียดเรา หรือ เราเพรียกหาจากสื่อ

ต้องออกตัวก่อนว่าผมไม่ใช่คนที่ตามข่าวจากหน้าหนังสือพิมพ์ หรือ โทรทัศน์มากนัก แต่ทุกครั้งที่ผมเปิดดู ผมจะเจอแต่ แพนด้าน้อยจะมีขนหรือยัง จะเดินได้หรือยัง จะลืมตาหรือยัง หรือไม่ก็เคอิโงะจะไปไหนมาไหน กินอะไร ลงหน้าหนึ่งเลยนะครับ

เรื่องแบบนี้ ขนาดคนสำคัญมากๆ ยังไม่มีรายงานขนาดนี้ ผมก็ไม่รู้เหมือนกันว่า คนบ้านเรานี่อยากรู้เรื่องแบบนี้ขนาดนี้เลยเหรอ หรือ จริงๆ สื่อยัดเยียดความรู้สึกอยากรู้ไอ้เรื่องพวกนี้มาให้เราตลอดมา จนเรารู้สึกว่าเราอยากรู้มัน คล้ายๆ กับเพลงบางเพลงที่ปราศจากความไพเราะโดยสิ้นเชิง แต่วิทยุก็สามารถสะกดจิตด้วยการเปิดซ้ำไปซ้ำมาจนเรารู้สึกว่ามันเพราะได้

หน้าแรกของข่าวควรจะมีอะไรที่มันเป็นประโยชน์ต่อสาธารณชนมากกว่านี้ เช่น วิธีป้องกันตัวจากโรคไข้หวัด 2009 วิธีการล้างมือ ข้อควรระวัง เอาแบบครึ่งหน้ากระดาษไปเลย แพนด้า เคอิโงะ เขารอได้ครับ แต่เรื่องไข้หวัด เรื่องไวรัสมันรอไม่ได้ครับ

Graduation Ceremony 2008 at SCMU

There is graduation ceremony 2008 today at SCMU which is day before graduates will receive a degree. SCMU today is an unmissable place because, I think, graduates want to save their memories with this scenery. Even I have been there for a little while due to raining, I can sense the feeling of joyful every inches in this campus.

PS The funny things before this day is that my friends went to buy gifts for their graduate, a question arose… Should we buy a pillow with “จบ 2551″ which means graduate 2008 or “จบ 2552″ screened on it because if we considered the academic year, it should be 2551 but if we determined the graduation year, it should be 2552. I found the answer which is 2551 is correct because it is official.
